Going into Tuesday I was not nervous a bit. Cole's c-section was planned and I loved it. I went in to that delivery with makeup, hair fixed and feeling great. I threw up once on the operating table with Cole and then was fine. I came out of surgery holding my baby, makeup on, hair fixed and feeling great! So...I really thought that Callen's delivery would be very similar. I was wrong. I was first surgery of the day - which I was excited about. Surgery got started around 7:30. My anesthesiologist was wonderful. He walked me through each and everything he was doing - which I had asked him to do for my anxiety. I also told him that I had become sick on the table with Cole. He told me that was normal and explained why my body did that. I felt confident that if I became sick, it would be one time and we would be good after that. He warned me when my blood pressure dropped (this causes people to become sick) and sure enough moments later I was sick. I got through that and felt great! Michael came into the operating room and we were about to meet our little man! I then became sick again...and again. I was getting very frustrated but each time I would feel a little better. At a little after 8 I hear my doctor and the nurses start to giggle and comment about how big Callen is. I looked at Michael and asked him if he was here and both Michael and the anesthesiologist said - no, just his head! So they could tell that Callen was big just from his head! A few moments later and at 8:12 Callen Gray Haffner entered the world! He was screaming like crazy and continued to scream to the point of it becoming comical! Dr. S dropped the drape and let me see Callen - he was beautiful and had the fattest cheeks I have ever seen! A little bit later they brought him to Michael and we both got to love on him for a minute. This hospital's policy is that the baby goes to the nursery for an hour and a half to 2 hours. The nursery nurse came and explained to me that because he was so big they were worried about his blood sugar and that if it started to drop they would supplement him with formula. Michael then left with Callen to go weigh and measure him. That is were things got harder on me. I started throwing up again - multiple times in fact. The anesthesiologist was wonderful. He wiped my face, told me it was going to be ok, when I cried he dabbed my tears and reminded the doctor that we didn't have stats on Callen yet. So...she sent a nursing student to get stats on Callen. Callen Gray came into the world weighing 9 pounds 9 ounces and is 20 inches long! He weighed 5 ounces more than Claire did! Such a big and beautiful baby! The doctor finished up, came and hugged me and left. They wheeled me back to my room and I immediately asked for Michael. What seemed like seconds later he was in the room with me with the rest of my family and his. I sadly kept getting sick, and this started my spiral of being sick all day. At one point they took me to my postpartum room where we waited, and waited and waited on Callen. Michael called the nursery, I called the nursery and finally at 11:30 Callen came to meet me! Sometime around this point or maybe a little later, I start to realize that every time they give me the anti nausea medicine I get sick and I asked them to stop pushing the medicine. This helped a lot - but it took until 7 PM for it to all get out of my system. Callen did have some blood sugar issues and we started supplementing him to get his sugars to come back up. It was a long hard day. It was NOT at all how I had planned or even imagined it to go. But, my baby boy is here and he is perfect. Blood sugar issues are fixed and we no longer have to worry about them.
